This page is in loving honor of a dear close friend and spiritual partner.

Between Moments of Eternity

Pat is a wonder of peacefulness. The radiance and inspiring love radiating from the inner-most depths of her soul brings comfort and joy to young and old alike. People and friends come to pay their respects to one who has given so generously to the community.

Kindred spirits representing all parts of individual diverse spiritual journeys find nurturing love and guidance; are quickened through the warmth of her benevolent smile manifesting service to all.

You have graciously given me a glimpse of what it truly means to be human.
Your love of Truth, appreciation of beauty
in all things;
the manifold depths of meanings hidden within the words,"love, unity and oneness";
all this combined with a rare sense of adventure molded within the crucible
of a healthy lifelong quest for what really IS!...
has shown me more than can be told.
Knowing you has been a real pleasure!

She, in the declining closing days of her life dying of cancer, embodies these words of Abdul-Baha,"O ye friends! Purify your eyes from beholding any as strangers. Do ye not see foreignness, nay rather, know all as friends; for with the observation of strangeness, the practice of love and unity is difficult. In this wonderful age ye must befriend all nations and communities. Ye must not look upon violence, force, evil intentions, persecutions or hostility, nay rather, ye must raise your eyes to the horizon of glory and see that each one of these creatures is a sign of the Lord of Signs and has stepped upon the arena of existence through divine favor and supreme energy. Thus they are known and not unknown, are friends and not strangers. We must deal with all according to the above criterion.

Therefore, the beloved must, with infinite kindness and love, associate and sympathize with both friends and strangers and not look at all upon the merits and capabilities of the persons. Under all circumstances they must show forth genuine love and be not defeated by the intensity of rancor, hatred, quarrel, malice and the grudge of the people.  Should they (the people) shoot arrows they (the friends) must administer milk and honey; if they give poison, the believers must impart delicacies; if they cause pain, let the beloved be a remedy; if they strike a blow, let them become the antidote.
(Abdu'l-Baha, Tablets of Abdu'l-Baha v2, p. 389)

Pat's Prayerfulness:

Below are prayers and meditations from the Baha'i Writings.
They have given Pat steadfast faith and strength over the years.
Every day she would diligently turn to prayer while asking the Holy Spirit to direct her life.

My God, Whom I worship and adore! I bear witness unto Thy unity and Thy oneness, and acknowledge Thy gifts, both in the past and in the present. Thou art the All-Bountiful, the overflowing showers of Whose mercy have rained down upon high and low alike, and the splendors of Whose grace have been shed over both the obedient and the rebellious.

O God of mercy, before Whose door the quintessence of mercy hath bowed down, and round the sanctuary of Whose Cause loving-kindness, in its inmost spirit, hath circled, we beseech Thee, entreating Thine ancient grace, and seeking Thy present favor, that Thou mayest have mercy upon all who are the manifestations of the world of being, and deny them not the outpourings of Thy grace in Thy days.

All are but poor and needy, and Thou, verily, art the All-Possessing, the All-Subduing, the All-Powerful.

- Bahá'u'lláh   (Compilations, Baha'i Prayers, p. 99)

O Thou kind Lord! O Thou Who art generous and merciful! We are servants of Thy threshold and are gathered beneath the sheltering shadow of Thy divine unity. The sun of Thy mercy is shining upon all, and the clouds of Thy bounty shower upon all. Thy gifts encompass all, Thy loving providence sustains all, Thy protection overshadows all, and the glances of Thy favor are cast upon all. O Lord! Grant Thine infinite bestowals, and let the light of Thy guidance shine. Illumine the eyes, gladden the hearts with abiding joy. Confer a new spirit upon all people and bestow upon them eternal life. Unlock the gates of true understanding and let the light of faith shine resplendent. Gather all people beneath the shadow of Thy bounty and cause them to unite in harmony, so that they may become as the rays of one sun, as the waves of one ocean, and as the fruit of one tree. May they drink from the same fountain. May they be refreshed by the same breeze. May they receive illumination from the same source of light. Thou art the Giver, the Merciful, the Omnipotent.

-'Abdu'l-Bahá (Compilations, Baha'i Prayers, p. 100)

Glorified art Thou, O my God! I yield Thee thanks that Thou hast made known unto me Him Who is the Dayspring of Thy mercy, and the Dawning-Place of Thy grace, and the Repository of Thy Cause. I beseech Thee by Thy Name, through which the faces of them that are nigh unto Thee have turned white, and the hearts of such as are devoted to Thee have winged their flight towards Thee, to grant that I may, at all times and under all conditions, lay hold on thy cord, and be rid of all attachment to anyone except Thee, and may keep mine eyes directed towards the horizon of Thy Revelation, and may carry out what Thou hast prescribed unto me in Thy Tablets.

Attire, O my Lord, both my inner and outer being with the raiment of Thy favors and Thy loving-kindness. Keep me safe, then, from whatsoever may be abhorrent unto Thee, and graciously assist me and my kindred to obey Thee, and to shun whatsoever may stir up any evil or corrupt desire within me.

Thou, truly, art the Lord of all mankind, and the Possessor of this world and of the next. No God is there save Thee, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.

- Bahá'u'lláh  (Compilations, Baha'i Prayers, p. 48)

O my God! O my God! Verily, thy servant, humble before the majesty of Thy divine supremacy, lowly at the door of Thy oneness, hath believed in Thee and in Thy verses, hath testified to Thy word, hath been enkindled with the fire of Thy love, hath been immersed in the depths of the ocean of Thy knowledge, hath been attracted by Thy breezes, hath relied upon his supplications to Thee, and hath been assured of Thy pardon and forgiveness. He hath abandoned this mortal life and hath flown to the kingdom of immortality, yearning for the favor of meeting Thee.

O Lord, glorify his station, shelter him under the pavilion of Thy supreme mercy, cause him to enter Thy glorious paradise, and perpetuate his existence in Thine exalted rose garden, that he may plunge into the sea of light in the world of mysteries.

Verily, Thou art the Generous, the Powerful, the Forgiver and the Bestower.

- 'Abdu'l-Bahá  47  (Compilations, Baha'i Prayers, p. 44)

Death Notice

Dear friends,
Pat Meier, a steadfast and staunch member of the Berea Kentucky Baha'i community, passed away today, May 12th 2011, shortly before 2:55 pm The burial will be tomorrow  in the Berea cemetery.  Please pray for the elevation of her soul in the Abha Kingdom.

O my God! O Thou forgiver of sins, bestower of gifts, dispeller of afflictions!
Verily, I beseech Thee to forgive the sins of such as have
abandoned the physical garment and have ascended to the spiritual world.
O my Lord! Purify them from trespasses, dispel their sorrows, and change their darkness into light.
Cause them to enter the garden of happiness,
cleanse them with the most pure water, and
grant them to behold Thy splendors on the loftiest mount.

- 'Abdu'l-Bahá (Compilations, Baha'i Prayers, p. 44)

"Know thou of a truth that the soul, after its separation from the body, will continue to progress until it attaineth the presence of God, in a state and condition which neither the revolution of ages and centuries, nor the changes and chances of this world, can alter. It will endure as long as the Kingdom of God, His sovereignty, His dominion and power will endure. It will manifest the signs of God and His attributes, and will reveal His loving kindness and bounty. The movement of My Pen is stilled when it attempteth to befittingly describe the loftiness and glory of so exalted a station. The honor with which the Hand of Mercy will invest the soul is such as no tongue can adequately reveal, nor any other earthly agency describe. Blessed is the soul which, at the hour of its separation from the body, is sanctified from the vain imaginings of the peoples of the world. Such a soul liveth and moveth in accordance with the Will of its Creator, and entereth the all-highest Paradise. The Maids of Heaven, inmates of the loftiest mansions, will circle around it, and the Prophets of God and His chosen ones will seek its companionship. With them that soul will freely converse, and will recount unto them that which it hath been made to endure in the path of God, the Lord of all worlds.

If any man be told that which hath been ordained for such a soul in the worlds of God, the Lord of the throne on high and of earth below, his whole being will instantly blaze out in his great longing to attain that most exalted, that sanctified and resplendent station. … The nature of the soul after death can never be described, nor is it meet and permissible to reveal its whole character to the eyes of men. The Prophets and Messengers of God have been sent down for the sole purpose underlying their revelation hath been to educate all men, that they may, at the hour of death, ascend, in the utmost purity and sanctity and with absolute detachment, to the throne of the Most High. The light which these souls radiate is responsible for the progress of the world and the advancement of its peoples. They are like unto leaven which leaveneth the world of being, and constitute the animating force through which the arts and wonders of the world are made manifest. Through them the clouds rain their bounty upon men, and the earth bringeth forth its fruits. All things must needs have a cause, a motive power, an animating principle. These souls and symbols of detachment have provided, and will continue to provide, the supreme moving impulse in the world of being. The world beyond is as different from this world as this world is different from that of the child while still in the womb of its mother."—Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, pp. 155–157.

Patricia my dear friend; with this being said, perhaps you may recount, in some sublime station seated upon the realms of eternity, the sufferings you have endured in the Path of the Divine Will. Perhaps you also will converse with those holy souls of yesterday and wing your own destined flight unto the realms of glory!

Somthing I have learned from those who had gone on,
leaving behind their wisdom for us to carry on.

Into the future we take their cherished memories along,
let us dance in celebration and honor them with a song.

They left us with many memories, and honor them we must;
allowing their legacy to live on within the heart of each of us.

They had touched our lives and we have been blessed
for the oppurtunity to love them; and today, they're our special guest.

By my friend and confidant:
Robert Lee Lair

Given in memory of senior citizens who passed away in 2011

Pat Meier possessed a keen mind right up until the end of her days. For years the two of us might regularly be seen for hours at a time focused deep in conversation or study at a fast food restaurant, only to then walk to get a snack at another and visit the day away until dusk forced us to quit.

Only a few years ago, we often would go hiking and adventuring around the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. At the age of 75 Pat was still very capable of making her way up. down and around the trails with ease. I would call these excursions "Pat-ventures". It seemed like something unscheduled or unexpected would always happen.

Pat would often mention," I wonder what people think that we do when we spend so much time together? They would never understand...I am not sure I understand why we seem to get so much out of simply conversing as we you?" At other times Pat would call us "spiritual partners".

We were able to share many layered philosophical aspects of perception and world outlook that I found challenging and insightful. The following letter taken from passages I wrote recently to a friend in jail reflects a sampling of the thinking and issues brought up during the many hours Pat and I spent together while she was still physically alert and active. Some concepts and questions as presented are applied in context as I am dealing with her death but most everything here was discussed at some point in time by me with Pat herself.

Suffice it to say, Pat was a complex many faceted woman; she was not concerned with the material world, but then again, very much was. At the same time, she had a world embracing awareness that was refreshingly stimulating; truly reflecting a global consciousness so essential for lasting amity, peace and unity between the races and nations of the world.

Below is a letter addressing a need for change on how we currently perceive, live and govern . In a world where we imprison ourselves within a bondage wrought by creed, racism nationalism, and political self-centered fervor; in a world where we have perceived "other aliens" and "strangeness" only through the bars of our own imagined fears, perceptions and misconceptions; where mutual mistrust, hatred, riches and power rule the hearts of men: Let us break the shackles we have forged between ourselves and rise above what men have created among themselves. Let us take off our narrow-focused restrictive blinders, broaden our perspective,  then soar upon wings of discovery from which to behold the magnificent vistas of Universal Cosmic Majesty spread before us.

I  feel deeply saddened that Pat is no longer available as the continuing avenue for insight and fellowship she provided to me for more than a decade. I am wondering if, in a real sense, grief may be seen as a self-based motivated feeling.

(Read as alternate book page columns.)>>>

Surely Pat, and others who pass beyond to the next world become metamorphosed and attain further advancement in the next realm as Ordained by the All-Wise. Yet we, left on Earth. miss our “loved ones” and wish they were still with us. How selfish is this? It is like asking a butterfly to go back to being a caterpillar!

A day or so ago after Pat died I experienced a real feeling of grace and comfort. It seemed to be that the arms of love and kindness were surrounding me and holding me close. A presence was about me that is hard to describe. There was light that brought illumination of new experience into my life. Of course, this may be all personal fancy and vain imagination but the fruits of the awareness were real.

One concept that was reiterated and refreshed within me is the idea that any means of uniting people in love and fellowship which results in wellbeing and spiritual advancement is a good thing. the Ten Commandments given to the Jews, the Eightfold Path shown to the followers of Gautama the Buddha, the Four Directions common to Native Indian heritage, the Beatitudes and Sermon on the Mount containing the sublime wisdom spoken of by Jesus; all this and more, when seen as teachings extolling higher virtues in mankind, have all been necessary vehicles leading us all in a step by step evolutionary progression towards a time when all will see each other as citizens of a single country and dwellers upon a single Earth.

With this in mind, it becomes evident that even practice of creed and doctrine, if it truly results in loving guidance and enlightened fellowship, can be a positive force in our lives. Ever widening perceived social groups; beginning with clans based on cooperative family relations to tribe, city-state, and nation; can possibly be seen as resulting from the impact great teachers have had from the beginning of civilization to the present. In other words, at certain times in human history, certain creeds and doctrines were beneficial in uniting people living in certain conditions imposed upon them in their own time. In the same way, others living under different circumstances in different environments may find beneficial guidance expressed in a way more suitable for their own particular growth and development.

In past ages, these separate distant populations would experience little contact between each other. Traditions and interpretations involving certain “exclusive truth” thinking would have little overall negative consequence. Indeed, back in ancient times, this thinking may have actually been beneficial to survival in a world fraught with danger. It certainly would have fostered cooperation and cohesion between family and tribal group members.

Faith direction, such as a life focus on attaining Nirvana or Heaven, as descriptions for “the end of suffering” would bring enriching thought, action and creativity to all and help followers rise above simply attaining basic survival needs. But, at the same time, it is unequivocally true that components of a misdirected, misapplied and sorely abused religious fanatical fervor founded in literal narrow scripture interpretations, especially when reinforced with the perceived political necessities of the time, can have a deleterious affect on social progress, equity, justice and stifle the lives of all concerned.

Spiritual enlightened applied concepts, originally conducive to uniting a tribe, city or guiding a civilization to the fullness of its maturity; but later misapplied resulting towards a downward decadence and “ungodliness done in the name of God” is seen throughout history. Bible teachings quoted to excuse slavery, torture or Inquisition; or Quran passages recited in support of Jihad, subjugation of women and application of harsh Shariah Islamic justice; are all symptoms of civilization turning away from Divine Enlightenment and focusing on the lower animal nature, where the most heinous offenses are committed between men, which easily clouds and renders, tarnished and hidden, the true spirit abiding within us.

Other examples might include Hindu worship of Lord Krishna or the Christian deification of the Lord Christ. In both faiths Christ and Krishna are seen as “only way” pathways for redemption from worldly “sinful” matters of the temporal world. Social doctrine centralizing either Christ or Krishna as a godhead would be an important, but simplistic fragile slippery element, in keeping family unity and peace between tribal members.

What initially may have been a benefit as a strengthening force among those representing a comfortable parochial singular way of thinking, would later de-evolve into a liability as "others" seen as "alien" and  “heretic” would become evermore manifest in their lives. This very traditional faith process, so beneficial for generations, would now turn against them. It would no longer be possible to follow an unchanged status quo or old time belief without also believing “other aliens” must be wrong for they are not like us and do not believe in our god by our name. If they are wrong they must be evil; if evil, they must be made like us and cleansed or be destroyed.

A related example showing a different level of similarity of two separate independent faith teachings is illustrated by a common teaching of Islam and Buddhism. As both the Buddha and Muhammad grew up in their respective Hindu and Christian traditions where their respective savior figures are venerated as God; both of these later teachers in turn strongly discouraged such thinking. It is a basic tenant of both Buddhism and Muslim that neither Buddha nor Muhammad are themselves God incarnate. Indeed, if the writings of these two faith authority figures are taken into account, it seems, the later aforementioned central faith Authorities were deliberately trying to rectify this harmful practice wrought by the misunderstandings of men and thus remedy this wayward situation.

I personally experienced the above concerns in action. I mentioned I needed to attend and take part in Pat’s burial service. Immediately two of my Christian friends asked,” Did Pat accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior before she died? Did she accept Jesus’ ransom for her sins through the Cross of Salvation?” I immediately attempted to avoid the judgment call I knew was coming by simply stating,” we simply shared different interpretations and embrace a different philosophy than what is given by Christian orthodoxy. I do not want to get involved in further discussion on this issue”. At this point a third member joined in saying,” If Pat failed to accept Jesus’ gift of salvation, she is going to Hell”. The statement was blatant and. to me, the recipient, cold hearted. Agreement was heard from others as they voiced,” you really need Jesus; it is only through Jesus…alleluia amen…praise Jesus”!

Pat was a dear close friend and confidant. She was loved and respected by many in the community. Her service as a volunteer at the local hospital for many years was exemplary; she certainly did not deserve this…nor did I! I felt the whole verbal assault was very rude and diametrically opposed to the fundamental Truth and inner meaning of what the Spirit of Christ had even taught!

Frankly, since being impacted by this type of mentality, I have been driven ever farther away from most churches in the area; especially” praise worship” ones preaching” only in the name of Jesus”. I am tired of what organized religion and its various institutions worldwide dish out as “truth” in the name of God. I ask you to look again at the opening of this letter concerning Pat and ask yourself if you truly belief Pat is now in Hell as a nonbeliever.

To clarify and summarize: Back in antiquity, the social religious needs addressing acceptance of outside “alien” thinking and influence were quite different than are the wide based “one world consciousness” “new era” needs of today. Now, in this age of worldwide travel and instant communication, the old ways of thinking, though at first beneficial in their own way, have become a major source of misunderstanding, contention and conflict between many differing peoples of the Earth.

Narrow minded creeds and belief systems based on the past are now often a major source of conflict and should be retired (or at least practiced in a way promoting advancement and mutual acceptance between diverse traditions and faiths).

In a world where we hold the power to completely destroy our own environment and each other through application of weapons of mass destruction, along with atrocities done in the name of God, a major fundamental change in our paradigm of thinking becomes imperative.

It is self evident. Think about it. War is now obsolete.

In your deliberations, please consider; If God is a loving Father who guides and watches over us, then the forgoing only stands to reason.

David Britton

Humanity Is A Diverse Ecosystem. Unity In Diversity = Strength And Stability

It is often said "one picture is worth more than a thousand words". Humanity is full of lovely shades of love, caring, youth and elderly  wisdom. The ability to communicate and record ideas through art, music, song and verse along with opportunities afforded by science and technology are all  hallmarks of the human species.

 This Is A

 Time For  Renewal.

If love and agreement are manifest in a single family, that family will advance, become illumined and spiritual; but if enmity and hatred exist within it destruction and dispersion are inevitable. This is likewise true of a city. If those who dwell within it manifest a spirit of accord and fellowship it will progress steadily and human conditions become brighter whereas through enmity and strife it will be degraded and its inhabitants scattered. In the same way the people of a nation develop and advance toward civilization and enlightenment through love and accord, and are disintegrated by war and strife. Finally, this is true of humanity itself in the aggregate. When love is realized and the ideal spiritual bonds unite the hearts of men, the whole human race will be uplifted, the world will continually grow more spiritual and radiant and the happiness and tranquility of mankind be immeasurably increased. Warfare and strife will be uprooted, disagreement and dissension pass away and Universal Peace unite the nations and peoples of the world. All mankind will dwell together as one family, blend as the waves of one sea, shine as stars of one firmament and appear as fruits of the same tree. (Abdu'l-Baha, Baha'i World Faith - Abdu'l-Baha Section, p. 228)

a quote from Bahá'u'lláh:  "We entreat God to deliver the light of equity and the sun of justice from the thick clouds of waywardness, and cause them to shine forth upon men. No light can compare with the light of justice. The establishment of order in the world and the tranquillity of the nations depend upon it."

New York Times best-selling author Azar Nafisi, author of "Reading Lolita in Tehran," speaks out on behalf of the Baha'is in Iran at a public event held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, in Washington, D.C.

Baha'u'llah Addresses the Christians of the World with These Words:

THIS is an Epistle from Our presence unto him whom the veils of names have failed to keep back from God, the Creator of earth and heaven, that his eyes may be cheered in the days of his Lord, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting

Say, O followers of the Son![1] Have ye shut out yourselvesfrom Me by reason of My Name? Wherefore ponder ye not in your hearts? Day and night ye have been calling upon your Lord, the Omnipotent, but when He came from the heaven of eternity in His great glory, ye turned aside from Him and remained sunk in heedlessness.

[1 Jesus.]

Consider those who rejected the Spirit when He came unto them with manifest dominion. How numerous the Pharisees who had secluded themselves in synagogues in His name, lamenting over their separation from Him, and yet when the portals of reunion were flung open and the divine Luminary shone resplendent from the Dayspring of Beauty, they disbelieved in God, the Exalted, the Mighty. They failed to attain His presence, notwithstanding that  10  His advent had been promised them in the Book of Isaiah as well as in the Books of the Prophets and the Messengers. No one from among them turned his face towards the Dayspring of divine bounty except such as were destitute of any power amongst men. And yet, today, every man endowed with power and invested with sovereignty prideth himself on His Name. Moreover, call thou to mind the one who sentenced Jesus to death. He was the most learned of his age in his own country, whilst he who was only a fisherman believed in Him. Take good heed and be of them that observe the warning.

[1 Jesus.]

Consider likewise, how numerous at this time are the monks who have secluded themselves in their churches, calling upon the Spirit, but when He appeared through the power of Truth, they failed to draw nigh unto Him and are numbered with those that have gone far astray. Happy are they that have abandoned them and set their faces towards Him Who is the Desire of all that are in the heavens and all that are on the earth.

They read the Evangel and yet refuse to acknowledge the All-Glorious Lord, notwithstanding that He hath come through the potency of His exalted, His mighty and gracious dominion. We, verily, have come for your sakes, and have borne the misfortunes of the world for your salvation. Flee ye the One Who hath sacrificed His life that ye may be quickened? Fear God, O followers of the Spirit, and walk not in the footsteps of every divine that hath gone far astray. Do ye imagine that He seeketh His own interests, when He hath, at all times, been threatened by the swords of the enemies; or that He seeketh the vanities of the world, after He hath been imprisoned in the most desolate of cities? Be fair in your judgement and follow not the footsteps of the unjust.

Open the doors of your hearts. He Who is the Spirit verily standeth before them. Wherefore banish ye Him Who hath purposed to draw you nigh unto a Resplendent Spot? Say: We, in truth, have opened unto you the gates of the Kingdom. Will ye bar the doors of your houses in My face? This indeed is naught but a grievous error. He, verily, hath again come down from heaven, even as He came down from it the first time. Beware lest ye dispute that which He proclaimeth, even as the people before you disputed His utterances. Thus instructeth you the True One, could ye but perceive it.

Here are links to sites made by good friends of mine that illustrate "unity in diversity" in mankind.

If you are into unusual writings expressing unorthodox views; opinions that challenge age old assumptions and makes you think; check out this active blog.

"Speaking Out World" focuses on environmental issues. Mountaintop removal coal mining as practiced in Kentucky, West Virginia and eastern Tennessee is used as a prime example of how we as humans are sacrificing ancient ecologies for short term profit.

"Toon Spirit" is rather unusual. This Christian site explores the use of secular cartoons to illustrate Bible lessons.
